The Drinking Gourd Refuge is not simply an organization — we are a church, born from the waters of liberation and the soil of service. Our ministry is mutual aid: feeding the body and tending the spirit. We practice faith not only in words but in deeds — growing food, offering refuge, and building community where scarcity once lived.

How your donation helps?

When you give, you are not donating — you are joining the congregation of care. Your offering becomes part of the sacred cycle: land tending, healing work, food distribution, and ceremonies that remind us that God, the Ancestors, and the Earth walk with us in reciprocity.
Your gift makes possible:
- Sacred Meals & Mutual Aid: Weekly food distributions that nourish our neighbors and honor the divine in every body.
- Rest & Refuge: Free or low-cost retreats for those who rarely receive rest — caregivers, organizers, formerly incarcerated, and frontline workers.
- Ceremony & Celebration: Services, seasonal gatherings, and rituals that reconnect us to Spirit, to one another, and to the land.
- Education for Liberation: Teaching herbalism, growing skills, and African-diasporic spiritual traditions as sacred tools of survival and joy.
We welcome your monthly offerings, one-time gifts, or in-kind contributions of tools, seeds, and time. Each act of generosity builds our living altar of justice, joy, and self-determination.
To give is to remember that spirit moves through hands.
Your offering is a hymn of gratitude — and a declaration that our liberation is collective.

Impact
“Our ministry is measured not in sermons preached, but in bellies fed and spirits renewed.”
At The Drinking Gourd Refuge Church, our sacred work is to live the gospel of interdependence. We don’t wait for miracles — we make them, together. Through mutual aid, spiritual service, and earth stewardship, we practice a theology of nourishment: where food, rest, and dignity are holy sacraments.
Our Growing Ministry of Impact:
- Mutual Aid & Food Sovereignty: We’ve distributed hundreds of pounds of fresh produce — okra, sweet potatoes, collards, and mushrooms — grown with love and shared freely across Oakland and beyond.
- Sanctuary & Retreat: We’ve hosted individuals seeking healing after incarceration, burnout, or displacement — offering not just space, but community and prayer.
- Education & Apprenticeship: Through land-based ministry and hands-on learning, we teach farming, sacred plant medicine, and the spiritual practices of our ancestors as pathways to liberation.
- Community Healing Services: Regular gatherings, altar work, and circle worship that uplift African-Diasporic wisdom and bring forward new forms of faith grounded in freedom.
- Collaborative Outreach: We partner with local churches, cultural groups, and nonprofits to ensure that the blessings we receive are shared widely — not as charity, but as covenant.
We measure our impact in restored dignity, in hands joined over harvest tables, in the hum of a people remembering their holiness through service.
Our work is the sermon.
Our altar is the earth.
Our congregation is every soul that believes in collective care.
